Maradona Selects a Non-Messi Captain
Diego Maradona has tapped Javier Mascherano to captain Argentina under his reign. This is somewhat surprising considering that for the last couple years it has seemed like Lionel Messi was the only member of the team that Maradona could name.
When Maradona first asked Mascherano to accept the position, though, the Liverpool midfielder declined. But Maradona, who just returned from a trip to England to see both Mascherano and Carlos Tevez, told a radio station: “I’ve convinced him.” Yeah. I bet having a 120,000 member cult that worships you like a god can help convince people to bend to your will.
So there you have it. Javier Mascherano, and not Lionel Messi, will captain Argentina under Maradona. I guess Carlos Tevez is happy that Messi won’t have to spontaneously combust now.
