We all know people who like to take a joke too far and run into the ground and for Brazilian defender Dante, Bayern Munich teammate Thomas Muller is that person. In the wake of Germany’s 7-1 win against Brazil at last summer’s World Cup — the loss that devastated the host nation and plunged it into a chasm of unending despair and sadness — Muller apparently decided it would be super funny to repeatedly stab Dante in his open wound.
In an interview with Globo, Dante said, “After [Germany] were champions and we came back, Thomas Muller, who always likes to play here and there, made some jokes. Then I came to him and said, ‘We can joke, but for me that’s not cool, it’s not time yet.'”
Dante added that Muller then apologized to him and the jokes about that game ended right there. Or Muller and the rest of the German players just started saving their jokes about it for after he leaves the room.
And now that Dante has made this known, opposing fans in Germany will probably make whatever Muller said to him seem comparatively compassionate.
Of course Dante must be living ‘his’ Inferno after that humiliating defeat to the Germans. Not only because he’s from Brazil (the so-called ‘country of football’) – which had so mercilessly outplayed them in 2002 – but also because it was through his sector that most of Germany’s goals happened. His total lack of chemistry with David Luiz (Scolary’s fault of course) opened up an avenue in a helpless Brazilian defense against a highly organized German team. Felipão should have foreseen such a possibility way before the tournament started and trained his pupils better (maybe he shouldn’t have put in the team a guy the Germans knew so much). Captain Tiago Silva’s absence that day was even more crucial than Neymar’s physically, tactically and psychologically traumatic injury – that for sure also considerably contributed to shatter the team’s confidence. Thomas Müller and his companions though had nothing to do with it and naturally wouldn’t miss such a wonderful chance. It would be more than understandable that weeks later they chose their fellow teammate as their punching bag 😀 . To Brazil it only rests a consolation: of being the sole nation to have won all its multiple World Cups in foreign soil (the only exception is Spain which has just one title though). A great lesson to Brazil and to Dante. Bear with it, my lad! 🙂 …
