DTotD: Luke Shaw suffers gruesome leg injury against PSV

Early in the first half of Manchester United’s Champions League group-stage opener at PSV, Luke Shaw suffered a sickening leg injury (later confirmed to be a double fracture) resulting from a dangerous challenge by Hector Moreno.

Shaw’s leg appeared to be badly broken as he rolled on the pitch and he had to be carried off on a stretcher after an extended period of treatment. Louis van Gaal tried to comfort his player as he was taken away, but this is absolutely devastating for a young player who seemed to be finding his best form after struggling in his first season with the club. Heart breaking.

Moreno wasn’t punished for the challenge, but he did go on to score an equalizer for PSV before halftime. And he later apologized for the incident.

“I know how it feels, I know how difficult such a thing,” he said, having broken his leg against the Netherlands during the 2014 World Cup. “I feel very bad about it, I am so sorry.”

This has been the Dirty Tackle of the Day: a chronicling of unfortunate events.
