The Barclays Premier League is dead

When the 2015/16 season ends, so will the Barclays Premier League. Starting next season, it will officially go by the name everyone who isn’t contractually obligated to say “Barclays” (or a corporate wonk) uses now: “Premier League.”

According to PA Sport, the decision to eliminate title sponsorship “reflects the organization’s desire to mirror major American sports leagues like the NBA and NFL in presenting a ‘clean’ brand.” It marks the first time since the league’s inaugural season of 1992/93 that it has not had a title sponsor (the first was Carling).

The modified name comes with a new logo, which reduces the lion that has represented the league since its inception in 1992 to just a decapitated head. It remains unclear whether an American dentist is responsible for this.

Says the head of the design firm behind the new look (via PremierLeague.com):

“Our aim was to create an identity that acknowledges everyone who plays a part in one of the most exciting leagues in the world,” Stafford said. “And with a fresh, new take on the iconic Lion, we’ve created an identity that’s purpose-built for the demands of the modern world. While staying true to the Premier League’s history and heritage.”

In other words, it’s a lion’s head.
