Paying tribute to one of the greatest legends of football shouldn’t be hard. You share one of the many images of him, say something about his wide reaching influence on the game we all love and you’ve done it. But for some this proved to be surprisingly challenging.
West Ham owner David Gold used his personal Twitter account to announce the signing of Spanish midfielder Pedro Obiang from Sampdoria on Wednesday. Except he welcomed Pedro by including a picture of Juventus defender and entirely different human being Angelo Ogbonna.

This is apparently “Look At All The Cool Stuff I Have!” Week for professional footballers on social media. It started with Gerard Pique showing a portion of his shirt collection while cleaning out his closet. The first group of neatly arranged shirts showed that Pique has an eye for the superstars when swapping shirts after matches, as it contained the likes of Francesco Totti, David Beckham, and Ronaldinho.
The Italian press ran a story this week worthy of a Scooby Doo episode: That new Sampdoria signing Samuel Eto’o purchased a 40-room villa in Portofino, Italy that is cursed by Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun for €25 million (marked down from €40 million).
Lionel Messi’s official Instagram account is now following Chelsea FC’s official Instagram account. This is somehow both important news and evidence of something. Since everyone remembers when Messi followed Manchester City on Instagram in March of last year and then immediately joined the club and won 17 trophies with them, including the World Series of Rugby, before returning to Barcelona and pretending it never happened.
Obviously, there are a number of perfectly reasonable explanations for Messi’s sudden interest in Chelsea’s official social media presence. These are a few.
