Watch an injured Yannick Bolasie go wild as he watches Congo from his couch

Watching a person watch a match has never been so delightful

A knee injury has kept Yannick Bolasie from playing for Congo at the African Cup of Nations, but it hasn’t stopped him from supporting his team from afar. The Everton winger posted video of himself watching last week’s group-stage match between Ivory Coast and Congo to his YouTube channel, including the moment when he saw Neeskens Kebano give them a lead in the 9th minute.

Bolasie looked like he nearly hurt himself further as his euphoria propelled him off the couch, but thankfully he appeared to make it through the goalgasm unharmed.

The match ended in a 2–2 draw, which was enough to help Congo advance to a quarterfinal match against Ghana, while reigning champions Ivory Coast were eliminated with no wins in the group stage. And now, watching injured players watch their teams play is my new favorite thing.

DTotD: Burkina Faso player punches opponent in the face

During an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Botswana, Burkina Faso defender Steeve Yago decided to utilize a highly effective method of defense: punching his opponent in the face. This approach succeeded in getting the Botswana player off the ball. It also got Yago a red card and a knockout, since his victim was carried off on a stretcher.

Burkina Faso won the match 2-1 as two other red cards were shown on the day.

This has been the Dirty Tackle of the Day: a chronicling of unfortunate events.

Ivory Coast goalkeeper scores AFCON winning penalty, coach consoles opposing players

The Ivory Coast have won the African Cup of Nations title 23 years after winning it for the first time with a penalty from goalkeeper Boubacar Barry (a.k.a. Copa Barry) serving as the shootout decider. A shootout that Gervinho, who was subbed off just before it began, couldn’t bring himself to watch.

The African Cup of Nations semifinal between host nation Equatorial Guinea and Ghana was marred by crowd violence that forced an extended stoppage of play late in the second half and put Ghana’s players and fans in danger. But Ghana still won 3-0 to advance to the final, where they will face the Ivory Coast, thanks in part to goalkeeper Brimah Razak’s good luck charm.

Razak brought his favorite Spider-Man action figure onto the pitch with him and placed it next to his goal. And with that comforting presence at his side, he kept a clean sheet to help his team reach the final.

Gervinho throws a tantrum after getting sent off for slapping a dude in the head

Gervinho had a complete and total meltdown during Ivory Coast’s African Cup of Nations match against Guinea. It began with him slapping Naby Keita in the head for supposedly stepping on his foot and when the referee showed the Roma striker a red card for his ill-advised retaliation, he completely lost his mind and threw a tantrum worthy of a two-year-old.

This all played out in the 58th minute with the Ivory Coast down 1-0, but being reduced to 10 men didn’t stop them from scoring an equalizer in the 72nd minute. Not sure if that will make Gervinho feel better or worse, though.
