Chivas went a little overboard celebrating a win in a poorly attended friendly against Boca Juniors

When marketing ploys go spectacularly wrong

(Chivas)

On Thursday night, Chivas Guadalajara hosted Boca Juniors in a friendly billed as the DUELO DE GIGANTES (duel of giants). The marketing campaign used to promote this match was rather intense—billing it as an event to decide continental supremacy (again, this is a Thursday night friendly).

ÉPICO or not, one would think that a visit from a massive club like Boca Juniors would pull in the fans and be an enjoyable evening for everyone, but when the match began, it looked like they forgot to unlock the doors at Estadio Chivas.

That’s embarrassing. And, as expected, it drew a fair bit of ridicule from the internet (particularly from Club America supporters, who were likely rankled by that “continental supremacy” talk).

Regardless of the attendance (or lack thereof), Chivas went on to win in a shootout. Good for them! But then the overblown pageantry continued when they brought out a stage and fired up the confetti canons and blasted Queen’s “We Are The Champions” to present the team with what looked like a replica of the UEFA Champions League trophy as the 12 people in the stands looked on.

When your club hasn’t won a Primera Division title in 11 years, I guess that trophy party trigger finger gets a little itchy.

Seeing all of this inevitably brings us back to the original question of “What the hell was this match anyway?” And the answer is apparently pretty simple.

If they do this again maybe they’ll just call it the Duelo De Divertido.

We know Carlos Tevez loves Boca Juniors since he left Europe to return to the club where his career began, but it goes even farther than that. Tevez is now the proud owner of a La Bombonera foosball table that is serious business. All this thing is missing is a tiny Maradona jumping around in the stands.

Meanwhile, in a completely unrelated development, Tevez’s former teammate at Juventus, Paul Pogba, now has Pokemon hair.

DTotD: Carlos Tevez gets launched into space

Carlos Tevez took a heavy challenge from Gustavo Gomez late in Boca Juniors’ Copa Argentina match at Lanus. Tevez scored Boca’s first goal in what would be a 2-0 win and in the 80th minute, Gomez made him pay for it with this tackle from behind, earning himself a red card and giving Tevez a free trip to the moon.

Though his leg generated enough wind power to fuel all of Buenos Aires for the rest of the night, Tevez was able to finish out the match.

This has been the Dirty Tackle of the Day: a chronicling of unfortunate events.

Carlos Tevez returns to Boca Juniors, is happy he doesn’t have to speak English or Italian anymore

Carlos Tevez was unveiled before a huge crowd at La Bombonera as he made his return to his first club, Boca Juniors. In the 11 years since Tevez left he has played in Brazil, England, and Italy, and developed a reputation for an unwillingness to learn the local languages along the way (which resulted in him ignoring letters from the police). But now that Tevez is back to plying his trade in Argentina, he doesn’t have to worry about that anymore and he couldn’t be happier.

DTotD: Boca Juniors’ Leandro Marin tackles opponent’s calf muscle

Racing Club beat Boca Juniors 4-1 in the preseason Torneo de Verano, but Boca showed they are in midseason form with their horrific challenges with two players shown red cards in the first half. One of those Reckless Rickies was defender Leandro Marin, who slide into the back of Ricardo Centurion and planted his studs into the Racing midfielder’s calf.
