DTotD: Fred punches opponent in the back of the head, gets sent off

Remember Fred, the scapegoat for all of Brazil’s problems at the 2014 World Cup up until Neymar was murdered by Colombia? Well, he decided to release his pent-up frustration on the back of an opponent’s head during a cup tie between Fluminense and Atletico-PR.

While a teammate tied his shoe during preparations for a free kick, Fred viciously punched Paranaense defender Leo in the head, knocking him to the ground.

The referee showed Fred a red card (he also sent off Leo, for reasons that remain unclear) and Flu went on to lose 1-0. So that’s what Fred’s up to these days.

Avai substitute uses phone hidden in shin pad during match

(SporTV)

On the final day of the Brazilian Serie A season, Avai were in serious danger of relegation and facing Corinthians, who had already sealed the title. With a one point advantage on Figueirense, Avai had a vested interest in their match against Fluminense, so Avai striker Andre Lima smuggled a phone onto the bench in order to watch the Figueirense game.

To make sure no one caught on, he put the phone in a pair of shin pads. You know, so everyone would think he’s just a crazy person staring at his shin pads.

Santos player with a really dumb open-goal miss (in a cup final)

Already up 1-0 against Palmeiras in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil final, Santos had a golden opportunity to finish the match emphatically and give themselves a nice cushion going into the away leg. But Nilson couldn’t put the ball in an empty net.

How did he miss? By existing in a cruel world that needs no explanation to ruin lives. That’s all there is to it.

Not only did he do this in real life, but he did this in a cup final. If Santos don’t win this trophy, Nilson should definitely consider moving to a different planet.

DTotD: Vasco defender kicks opponent in the face

Vasco da Gama defender Rodrigo was a split second too late to the ball, so he settled for the next best thing and kicked Corinthians’ Malcom in the face instead.

Rodrigo was already on a yellow at the time, so this was more than enough to get him a second booking and an early shower. Malcom somehow continued on in the match, albeit with just one eyebrow still attached to his head.

DTotD: Brazilian U-20 match ends in kick fighting and 11 red cards

A U-20 match in Brazil between Sertaozinho and Flamengo de Guarulhos devolved into a giant kick fighting battle after the final whistle, resulting in 11 red cards (six for Sertaozinho and five for Flamengo).

According to Globo, the referee’s report stated that the fight began when Sertaozinho’s coach shoved a Flamengo player and Flamengo claimed that fans jumped the fence to attack their players, as did ball boys and opposing coaches. They also said that their bus was stoned as they embarked on their journey home.

If there’s one takeaway from this, it’s that these U-20 squads are definitely fighting at a senior team level.

Referee changes his mind after sending off Palmeiras player, who runs back from dressing room

It was up to Palmeiras defender Egidio to stop Chapecoense’s William Barbio after he beat another defender with a clever move. Egidio’s challenge proved effective as he stripped Barbio of the ball, but the attacker also went to ground in the process. This prompted the referee to show Egidio a red card. It was not the end of the story, though.

While Egidio headed down the tunnel in disbelief, the referee consulted with his assistants, who told him that the challenge was actually a good one. To his credit, the referee took on his colleague’s advice and put his ego to one side, then told Egidio’s teammates to call him back from the dressing room. So Egidio came jogging back out to rapturous applause from the home crowd.

This was about the only thing that went Palmeiras’ way in this match, however. Chapecoense went on to win 5-1.
