DTotD: Turkish player tackles opponent, then viciously kicks him in the head

With only a few days left in December, an amateur footballer in Turkey is making a bid for the nastiest display in a match this year with this vile tackle and head kick combo.

He starts by sweeping his opponent’s legs from behind — and that alone was enough for the referee to show him a red card. Perhaps realizing that he had nothing left to lose, he then went 50 steps further and savagely kicked his downed opponent in the head.

According to the Daily Mail, the victim needed nine stitches to his lip, but other than that was OK. Which is pretty amazing.

DTotD: Felipe Melo kicks Lazio player in the ear, gets sent off

Felipe Melo, who you might remember as the man who used Arjen Robben as a doormat during the 2010 World Cup, is still finding creative ways to assault people with his feet after all these years. During Inter’s Serie A match against Lazio, Melo was shown a straight red for proving that he could use Lucas Biglia’s shoulder as a foot rest.

DTotD: Vasco defender kicks opponent in the face

Vasco da Gama defender Rodrigo was a split second too late to the ball, so he settled for the next best thing and kicked Corinthians’ Malcom in the face instead.

Rodrigo was already on a yellow at the time, so this was more than enough to get him a second booking and an early shower. Malcom somehow continued on in the match, albeit with just one eyebrow still attached to his head.

DTotD: Russian futsal player throws ball and a punch at referee

Frustration can get the best of anyone and one Russian futsal referee found out that adding to it for another person can be dangerous.

Our series of unfortunate events begins with a player getting knocked down by an opponent. The referee stops play and awards the ball to that opponent’s team, since the player in yellow fell on top of the ball and appeared to touch it with his hand. This ruling did not please the player in yellow, so he threw the ball at the official’s head. The official then showed him a red card and so the player in yellow punched the referee in the head.

The lesson here? If you’re going to show a red card to a player who was willing to throw a ball at your face, you better duck immediately after doing so.

DTotD: Carlos Tevez gets launched into space

Carlos Tevez took a heavy challenge from Gustavo Gomez late in Boca Juniors’ Copa Argentina match at Lanus. Tevez scored Boca’s first goal in what would be a 2-0 win and in the 80th minute, Gomez made him pay for it with this tackle from behind, earning himself a red card and giving Tevez a free trip to the moon.

Though his leg generated enough wind power to fuel all of Buenos Aires for the rest of the night, Tevez was able to finish out the match.

DTotD: Brazilian U-20 match ends in kick fighting and 11 red cards

A U-20 match in Brazil between Sertaozinho and Flamengo de Guarulhos devolved into a giant kick fighting battle after the final whistle, resulting in 11 red cards (six for Sertaozinho and five for Flamengo).

According to Globo, the referee’s report stated that the fight began when Sertaozinho’s coach shoved a Flamengo player and Flamengo claimed that fans jumped the fence to attack their players, as did ball boys and opposing coaches. They also said that their bus was stoned as they embarked on their journey home.

If there’s one takeaway from this, it’s that these U-20 squads are definitely fighting at a senior team level.

Referee changes his mind after sending off Palmeiras player, who runs back from dressing room

It was up to Palmeiras defender Egidio to stop Chapecoense’s William Barbio after he beat another defender with a clever move. Egidio’s challenge proved effective as he stripped Barbio of the ball, but the attacker also went to ground in the process. This prompted the referee to show Egidio a red card. It was not the end of the story, though.

While Egidio headed down the tunnel in disbelief, the referee consulted with his assistants, who told him that the challenge was actually a good one. To his credit, the referee took on his colleague’s advice and put his ego to one side, then told Egidio’s teammates to call him back from the dressing room. So Egidio came jogging back out to rapturous applause from the home crowd.

This was about the only thing that went Palmeiras’ way in this match, however. Chapecoense went on to win 5-1.
