A new Toothbrush Guy emerges at Liverpool-Hoffenheim match

A legend of the game finally has a successor

Way back in 2009, in the 83rd minute of a match between Chelsea and Man United, an instant hero emerged behind a group of substitutes about to come onto the pitch. A man with an admirable dedication to dental hygiene casually brushing his teeth. It was as surreal as it was wonderful. But just as suddenly as Toothbrush Guy emerged, he disappeared—never to brush his teeth at a football match again.

Now, eight long years later, with the world crying out in need, a new Toothbrush Guy has appeared, this time at a Champions League qualifier between Liverpool and Hoffenheim.

Who are these men who bring toothbrushes (and toothpaste?) to football matches in England? Why do they do it? I don’t know and I don’t want to. The many mysteries they posses are better off remaining mysteries. For we are not worthy of the answers.

So here’s to you, Toothbrush Guys of football. May you elude cavities and watch good football for all the rest of your days.
