Mexico reach Gold Cup semifinal with convenient late penalty

For 120 minutes, Mexico did everything except finish their many chances to score against Costa Rica in the Gold Cup quarterfinals. But then the troll god of CONCACAF — a cruel deity with a perverse obsession with injustice — gave them the massive help they needed to advance in the form of a phantom penalty.

After more than a year of cursing Arjen Robben for the dubious late penalty that helped the Netherlands beat them in the World Cup round of 16, Mexico gratefully accepted a bit of cosmic repayment during injury time of the second period of extra time.

Andres Guardado then converted the penalty and Mexico won 1-0, putting them in a semifinal against Panama while the U.S. will face Jamaica. But while Mexico celebrate today, the CONCACAF troll god conspires with his referee priests, plotting their next prank…

The second half of Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago’s final Gold Cup group stage match was magnificent. Seven goals were scored as a 2-0 lead for Mexico in the 51st minute ended as a 4-4 draw that only became more unbelievable with each passing minute.

Tijuana’s Juan Arango gets away with biting opponent on the shoulder

Tijuana midfielder Juan Arango is best known for scoring magnificent goals, which he did again in his side’s 4-3 loss to Monterrey on Saturday. But it was his nibble on an opponent’s shoulder during the game that will change his reputation to that of a Luis Suarez wannabe.

Arango clearly took Jesus Zavala’s shirt between his teeth for reasons unknown, but it’s unclear if he actually pinched the skin. Regardless, Zavala fell to the ground and showed his shoulder to the referee in a scene reminiscent of what Giorgio Chiellini did after he was bit by Suarez at the World Cup.
