Dries Mertens booked for attempting Three Stooges routine with opponent’s nose

“Why I oughta…”

When we last left Dries Mertens, he was pretending to urinate on the corner flag like a dog after scoring a goal for Napoli. Now, on international duty with Belgium, he’s acting out a half-baked nose-pinching scheme he must have gotten from an old episode of the Three Stooges.

Mertens’ unwilling partner in this odd display was Greece defender Georgios Tzavellas. The Belgian tried to grab Tzavellas’ nose once, but the defender was able to evade his fingers, so Mertens—being the weirdo that he is—decided to give it another go. Tzavellas wasn’t having it, though. You would think that having a stranger be nice enough to make sure you don’t have anything dangling out of your nose would at least get a “thank you,” but apparently not.

Mertens was booked for this, but Tzavellas was eventually sent off in the final minutes of the match, which ended 1–1.

The best moments from Wales’ celebrations after beating Belgium

Wales beat Belgium 3-1 to become the smallest nation to ever reach a Euros semifinal, setting up a tasty showdown between Real Madrid teammates Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo.

It looked like Wales’ fairytale run in their first ever Euros appearance might come to a predictable end with the far more talented Belgium scoring early, but Wales went on to score three unanswered goals over the final hour of the match to advance. The performance elicited underdog sports cliches about heart and teamwork that have carried them through this tournament. And after the match, they really drove that point home.

Today in astonishing goalkeeping mistakes

Friday, April 8 2016 was apparently the day of a global competition to see who could make the most absurd goalkeeping error. Mickael Roche, who you might remember as the sacrificial lamb in goal for Tahiti during their 10-0 loss to Spain the 2013 Confederations Cup, was an early front runner with his own goal that defies all logic in an Oceania Champions League match.

Steven Defour is bad at roulettes

When we last saw Steven Defour, he was the subject of a giant tifo made by Standard Liege fans featuring his decapitated head. He had done something unforgivable for a former Standard Liege captain by signing with Anderlecht and when he was sent off during their meeting in January, the decision was enthusiastically cheered.

Well, Defour and Anderlecht returned to the Maurice Dufrasne Stadium on Sunday and this time the midfielder was laughed at. With Standard up 3-1 late in the match, Defour tried a little too hard to make something happen for his new side and attempted a Zidane style roulette. But he ended up falling over and gifting the ball to Standard without even touching a defender.

This, my friends, is why you should think twice before committing a betrayal.

Standard Liege supporters welcome back their Judas, Steven Defour, with decapitation tifo

Belgium international Steven Defour spent five years with Standard Liege, serving as the club’s captain for all but his first season with the club. He then spent three seasons with Porto, but returned to his homeland this season with Anderlecht — Standard’s fiercest rivals.

This did not go over so hot with his old club’s supporters. So when Defour returned to the Maurice Dufrasne Stadium wearing the wrong colors, the fans greeted him with a giant banner featuring a Jason Vorhees type holding a blood splattered machete in one hand and Defour’s severed head in the other, along with the words “RED OR DEAD.” It was subtle, but the message seemed to be that Defour is now dead to them.
